This too seems like a good argument for using XMPP instead, or especially Matrix, which is a web protocol. So I presume it would be harder to fingerprint than either email or XMPP.

That's crazy to me. I have meticulously exported and reimported my IMAP mailboxes every time I switched provider, and keep local copies in a Maildir that goes back all the way to 2002.

Not only does this allow me to use powerful tools like mu, but I'm also not at the mercy of $TECH_COMPANY.

@s0 @abrasive @voltagex @Unixbigot @projectgus Even though SnPb does work easier than other blends (except for maybe SnBi which you probably won't use outside of re-work), I try to avoid it given the kids in the house and the high toxicity. These days I'm usually working with paste on SMT components so there's little difference between using SnPb and SAC305 apart from the higher temperature required. For wire-work, I find Sn99Cu is easier to use than SAC305 wire.

@jeremydmiller Somewhere along the line the meaning of CI changed for many teams to “I dunno, it sort of works in my IDE, I'll let GitHub Actions figure out if it's right or not” ... and I hate it. CI was never supposed to be that, it's just team laziness. CI was always "run precisely the same checks on a neutral environment that I've already run on my machine; with all the latest changes currently on (or about to be) on the main branch; and do that frequently”. It was only supposed to fail if something had been either (a) missed in the environment dependencies, (b) a semantic conflict in two commits merged since the last CI run, (c) an external failure.

Of course CI as an idea “is failing” if people are centralizing the checks of all their barely baked code, and they're generating 100 times as many LoCs as they were (some of which might even be useful).

Anyway, I know you know all this.

Protocol choice determines who you can talk to using the app. It's hardly unimportant. It also determines which features can be supported. Eg both Matrix and XMPP have ways of handling voice/video, which AFAIK ChatMail lacks
